Balthazar has always been a first class goofball. From early on, in the first book De Wollebollen, he is being manipulated by criminal geniuses. More often than not he gets the blame for every single mishap. Compared to Dédé and Timothea Triangl, Balthazar is as meek as a lamb. Rather than being agnry at him, one takes pity on the poor soul.
From his first appearance in the Kiekeboe puppet show, Baltazar has been wearing his signature checkered suit. This jackass criminal is one of the characters who feature in the books from the very beginning.
