Charlotte has evolved from an obedient housewife to a liberated and assertive woman. She more or less had to because she needed to cope with a stubborn daughter, a precocious son and a husband who'd rather watch TV instead of having strange and exciting adventures.
Although Marcel Kiekeboe is supposed to be the man about the house, it's clear that Charlotte is the one in charge.
